How does the insurance company find out about moving violations?

snuz asked:

My understanding is that when you get a moving violation (e.g, a speeding ticket), the police or the courts or whoever will notify your insurance company. When your insurance company finds out and finds out about the points that are now on your license, they raise your insurance premium. However, a friend tells me that he’s received several speeding tickets, that his insurance company has never found out (meaning no one is notifying his insurance company), and that his premium has therefore never gone up. How is that possible?

The insurance company will get you to sign a paper when you open a policy that gives them permission to check your driving record at least once a year. This may be in the fine print but they still get your signature. In the event that any claim is filed they will check it again. For example if you have an accident and get a ticket because the accident was your fault, they will re-check your driving record so they can charge you a higher rate since there is an offense on your record now.

The local and state law enforcement agencies do not make any contact with your insurance agency at anytime UNLESS they have to verify that a certain vehicle has insurance.

I hope this answers your question.
